Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia claimed a historic triumph in regional football history after securing the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup title with a dramatic 4–2 penalty shootout victory over Thailand, following a 2–2 draw through extra time at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, Jakarta, on Monday (October 5).
The victory marks the country’s first international football trophy outside of its past Southeast Asian (SEA Games) gold medal achievements.
Playing before a capacity crowd in the capital, Indonesia set the tempo early with dominant possession and scoring threats from Luke Vickery, Justin Hubner and Ragnar Oratmangoen.
Thailand leaned heavily on counter-attacks, creating some close chances through Chanathip Songkrasin and Supachai Chaided.
The dynamic of the final shifted dramatically in the 80th minute when Thailand defender Nicholas Mickelson received a second yellow card, reducing the “War Elephants” to 10 men.
Indonesia capitalized four minutes later in the 84th minute as a free-kick from Dean James deflected off Thai player Iklas Sanron into the net.
However, Thailand struck back rapidly in the 87th minute when Sanron converted a delivery from Seksan Ratree to equalize at 1–1 and send the match into extra time.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, Thailand snatched the lead in the 110th minute through Peeradol Chamrasamee, who finished off a swift counter-attack launched by Anan Yodsangwal.
Indonesia responded relentlessly and found an equalizer in the 116th minute. Defender Rizky Ridho sent a low cut-back into the penalty area that was parried by Thai goalkeeper Saranon Anuin, allowing Elkan Baggott to pounce on the loose ball and smash home the rebound to make it 2–2.
In the ensuing penalty shootout, Indonesia demonstrated clinical composure.
Kevin Diks, Dean James, Elkan Baggott and Shayne Pattynama converted all four of Indonesia’s spot-kicks, while Thailand’s Sarach Yooyen and Nattapong Sayriya failed to score—sealing the historic championship win for the host nation.
