Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has sent emergency supplies and equipment to accelerate post-conflict recovery in Jayawijaya, Papua Highlands, as the emergency status extends through December 31, 2026.
The agency’s acting Data, Information and Disaster Communication Center Head Berton S.P. Panjaitan said here Thursday that operational support and supplies for displaced residents had been received by the Papua Highlands provincial and Jayawijaya district governments.
“BNPB has distributed food packages, blankets, mattresses, family kits, evacuation tents, 25-horsepower polyethylene boats, chainsaws and communication radios to support recovery operations,” he said.
Berton said the social conflict in Jayawijaya, which escalated in mid-May 2026, was triggered by a traffic accident that led to disputes over customary fines and attacks between groups.
The conflict killed 59 people, seriously injured five and left 139 with minor injuries, while forcing 2,902 residents to flee their homes.
Physical damage included 126 homes, 12 traditional honai houses, five education facilities, two village offices, one pastor’s residence, five kiosks and the collapse of the Kali Uwe Suspension Bridge.
To address the broader needs, Papua Highlands Governor extended the emergency status for the social conflict through Dec. 31, 2026, under Governor’s Decree No. 100.3.3.1/220/2026.
The response is also supported by Presidential Regulation No. 46 of 2026, which grants BNPB greater access and authority to accelerate reconciliation and recovery in regions with limited fiscal capacity.
Following a ministerial meeting led by the Coordinating Ministry for Political and Security Affairs in Jakarta on Wednesday (September 9), BNPB outlined three priorities, basic and psychosocial support, temporary housing or housing waiting funds, and permanent Type 36 homes.
