Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesian marines joined their counterparts from the United States, Japan, and South Korea in a shooting drill in Pesawaran District, Lampung, on Thursday (Sept. 3) as part of the 2026 Super Garuda Shield multilateral exercise.
The Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) noted in a press release on Friday that the training involved the Marine Corps of the Indonesian Navy, the United States Marine Corps, Japan’s Amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade, and the Republic of Korea Marine Corps.
Officially dubbed the Infantry Marksmanship Training Program (IMTP), the drill trained marines from the four countries in precision shooting at stationary and mobile targets. The participants were required to maintain their aim and continue firing while conducting rapid reloads.
Each team conducted the training in turn and completed all activities smoothly without incident. The TNI expressed hope that the IMTP would not only help Indonesian marines improve their marksmanship skills but also foster stronger ties among personnel from the four countries.
TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto noted that the 2026 Super Garuda Shield brings together 4,743 soldiers from 21 countries with a shared interest in testing operational preparedness, enhancing their capacity to address diverse threats, and strengthening defense diplomacy.
“Super Garuda Shield takes place every year in Indonesia,” he said in Bandung, West Java, on Aug. 31, adding that this year’s edition focuses on 12 training modules.
Apart from the four aforementioned countries, the exercise also involves Australia, the Netherlands, Brazil, Brunei Darussalam, India, the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, Cambodia, Canada, Laos, New Zealand, France, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam.
Subiyanto said the drills were scheduled to take place in Bandung, Jakarta, Lampung, South Sumatra, and North Kalimantan. Jakarta is set to host the closing ceremony on Sept. 11.
