Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Indonesian Navy’s KRI Keris-624 conducted naval gun drills in the Bali Sea on Wednesday to sharpen crew combat skills and ensure its weapons systems were functioning properly.

The exercise took place on October 28, according to an official statement from the Navy’s Eastern Fleet Command (Koarmada II) received here Thursday.

Navy Information Chief First Admiral Tunggul said personnel fired several types of naval guns during the exercise.

“The crew of KRI Keris-624 fired its 57 mm, 40 mm, and 20 mm guns,” Tunggul said, adding that the crew also practiced firing M4 rifles chambered for 5.56 mm ammunition.

Before the exercise, KRI Keris-624 had conducted surveillance and security monitoring of Australian warship HMAS Choules as it passed through the Bali Sea, ship commander Lt. Col. Romi Iskandar Hasibuan said in the same statement.

“Monitoring foreign warships is part of the Navy’s duties to track their movements and safeguard waters under Indonesia’s jurisdiction,” Romi said.

He said the surveillance mission and gun drills were completed safely and without incident.

Romi expressed hope that the activities would strengthen his crew’s weapons-handling and maritime surveillance skills to help safeguard Indonesia’s maritime sovereignty.
