Jakarta (ANTARA) – Rahmat Erwin Abdullah won the gold medal in the men’s 75-kilogram weightlifting event at the 2026 Asian Games, posting a total lift of 366 kilograms at the Nagoya City Trade and Industry Center, Japan, on Saturday.
In a tightly contested competition, Abdullah recorded a best snatch lift of 160 kilograms and a clean and jerk of 206 kilograms for a combined total of 366 kilograms.
The silver medal went to Thai lifter Weeraphon Wichuma, who posted a total lift of 365 kilograms, from a 160-kilogram snatch and a 205-kilogram clean and jerk.
The bronze medal was won by North Korean lifter Ri Chong Song, who recorded a total lift of 357 kilograms, comprising a 162-kilogram snatch and a 195-kilogram clean and jerk.
In the snatch session, Abdullah opened smoothly with a successful 155-kilogram lift on his first attempt. He then executed a 158-kilogram lift on his second attempt. On his third attempt, Abdullah again performed well, lifting 160 kilograms.
However, Abdullah faced pressure from Ri Chong Song, who successfully lifted 162 kilograms on his second attempt, marking his best result in the snatch session.
Entering the clean and jerk session, the competition grew even tighter. Ri Chong Song opened with a 195-kilogram lift, setting a new Asian Games record. Weeraphon Wichuma then recorded a 200-kilogram lift, setting a new World Record. Abdullah subsequently broke that record by successfully lifting 201 kilograms.
The competition continued when Ri Chong Song failed to lift 202 kilograms on his next attempt, putting Abdullah in the lead with a total lift of 361 kilograms.
Ri then failed again in his attempt to lift 202 kilograms, leaving the gold medal contest between Abdullah and Wichuma.
Wichuma took his final attempt and successfully lifted 205 kilograms, bringing his total to 365 kilograms and putting him temporarily in first place.
Abdullah then took his second attempt at 206 kilograms. He successfully executed the lift and posted a total of 366 kilograms, securing the gold medal for Indonesia. With that result, Abdullah edged out Wichuma by one kilogram, with the Thai lifter having to settle for silver.
