Indonesia’s DPD pushes green democracy for sustainable development

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s Regional Representatives Council (DPD RI) has proposed adopting a “green democracy” approach to governance to advance socioeconomic development, address environmental challenges, and adapt to changing conditions.

DPD RI Speaker Sultan B. Najamuddin presented the idea during the council’s joint session with the House of Representatives (DPR RI), saying Indonesia faces a range of development challenges, including the high cost of democratic processes and the potential impacts of climate change.

“To address these challenges, the DPD RI has proposed the idea of green democracy to balance political development with social, economic, and ecological sustainability,” he said at the Parliament Complex in Jakarta on Friday.

Najamuddin argued that green democracy could make Indonesia’s democratic processes more efficient by reducing costly political practices while strengthening statesmanship in support of national development.

The senator also expressed confidence that the approach could lay the foundation for Indonesia to make a major leap forward by capitalizing on its current demographic bonus, a period in which the population is dominated by people of productive age.

“Through the green democracy paradigm, we seek to ensure that our huge demographic bonus does not become a liability. It must be regarded as both an opportunity and an asset to nurture quality generations for the Golden Indonesia 2045 vision,” he said.

The Joint Session of the DPR RI and DPD RI was held in conjunction with the 2026 Annual Session of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR RI), during which President Prabowo Subianto delivered his annual State of the Nation Address.

Prabowo addressed the assembly in the presence of several national figures, including Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, seventh President Joko Widodo, 10th and 12th Vice President Jusuf Kalla, 11th Vice President Boediono, and 13th Vice President Ma’ruf Amin.

The sessions formed part of the state events commemorating Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day under the theme “Sovereign, Just, and Prosperous Indonesia.”
