Indonesia’s Jokowi calls for ‘UN 2.0’ to address global challenges

Kuala Lumpur (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s seventh president, Joko Widodo, called for a “United Nations 2.0” to address increasingly complex conflicts and strengthen global mediation, diplomacy and institutions to maintain peace.

Jokowi made the remarks during a speech at the Penang Peace Dialogue in Penang, Malaysia, on Sunday, urging reforms to make the United Nations more effective.

He said conflicts were increasingly interconnected, with their effects crossing national borders and creating challenges that existing global institutions struggled to address effectively.

The former president said the United Nations should redefine its systems, processes and strategies to remain relevant and better equipped to help create a more peaceful world.

Jokowi said sustainable prosperity depended on countries choosing peace over conflict, cooperation over competition and collaboration over division.

He also said countries could not succeed or prosper alone in a conflict-ridden world, while lasting peace required trust among nations.

Jokowi said Southeast Asia had become more than a diverse region, describing it as an example of civilizations coexisting, learning from one another and developing together.

He described Southeast Asia as an important model of cooperation among civilizations in an increasingly multipolar world.

The region’s differences should be viewed as bridges for greater understanding, cooperation and shared progress rather than barriers, Jokowi said.

He said a developed country’s strength should be measured not only by technological advancement, economic power or political influence, but also by responsibility and wisdom.

Jokowi said developed countries should look beyond their national interests and assume greater responsibility for building trust, strengthening cooperation and promoting global peace.

He called for stronger global institutions, mediation and diplomacy as part of efforts to respond to increasingly interconnected challenges and preserve international peace.
