Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Jakarta Provincial Legislative Council (DPRD) has asked the provincial government to rationalize the 2023 budget for flood handling.

“It is necessary to rationalize so that the budget for flood handling next year runs effectively,” chairperson of the Jakarta DPRD’s Budget Agency, Prasetyo Edi Marsudi, said here on Tuesday.

The Jakarta provincial government has made flood mitigation, traffic congestion alleviation, and anticipation of the economic recession priority programs.

In the 2023 budget, the proposed budget for flood handling has been pegged at Rp1.29 trillion, with a budget of Rp219 billion proposed for Central Jakarta, Rp247 billion for North Jakarta, Rp236 billion for West Jakarta, Rp193 billion for South Jakarta, Rp296 billion for East Jakarta, and Rp105 billion for the Seribu Islands.

Deputy chairperson of the Budget Agency, Khoirudin, said he expects all mayors and district head (Seribu Islands) in Jakarta to make breakthroughs to realize the goal of ensuring waterlogging recedes before six hours, widening of road sections based on vehicle growth, and increasing training for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to reduce unemployment.

“Hopefully, people’s complaints about flooding will not be as common as they are today,” he remarked.

Meanwhile, head of the Jakarta Regional Development Planning Agency, Atika Nurahmania, said that flood-handling activities in Jakarta are focused on the construction of flood gates and flood control dams, the provision of the city’s drainage and supporting facilities, and the operation and maintenance of drainage systems and flood pumps.

Moreover, for mitigating floods, the Jakarta administration is also focusing on the provision of maintenance services as well as maintenance costs and licensing of heavy equipment.

“In the specifications of each region, we have conveyed activities that support the targets of the three big priorities,” Nurahmania said.Related news: Floods affect 150,322 people in week ended Oct 9: BNPB
