Jakarta LPDP scholarship offers study options in New York, Australia

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said the Jakarta scholarship program, modeled on the Education Fund Management Institution (LPDP), would provide opportunities for recipients to study at universities in New York, Australia, and other destinations.

“Several universities are open to collaborating with Jakarta, including New York University and Columbia University, as well as universities in the UK and Australia, among others,” he said on Thursday.

Pramono said the Jakarta scholarship program would cover fields beyond science and technology.

“We are giving them opportunities to learn culinary skills, design, and other related fields,” he said.

According to Pramono, current needs must be aligned with relevant academic skills and suitable study destinations.

“Times have changed, so I have asked for a balanced approach, including opportunities to study in China, Japan, South Korea, and other countries,” he said.

Pramono previously announced that children and people with disabilities would also have opportunities to participate in the Jakarta scholarship program.

“There are around 50 to 75 of them, and I hope that if an LPDP scholarship program is established for children with special needs who wish to pursue education domestically or abroad, we will be pleased to provide the necessary support,” he said on October 10.

He explained that Jakarta Regional Regulation No. 4 of 2022 mandates the protection of people with disabilities and the fulfillment of their rights, including access to education.

“Under Jakarta Regional Regulation No. 4 of 2022, the Jakarta administration should provide adequate facilities to support these children,” he said.

The Jakarta scholarship program will be coordinated with the central government’s LPDP, which operates under the Ministry of Finance, while funding will come from the Jakarta provincial administration.

The Jakarta provincial government is preparing an overseas scholarship program for 75 students from the capital in 2027.

“The funding will come from Jakarta and has been included in the regional budget, with Rp100 billion (US$5.4 million) allocated for 50 to 75 prospective scholarship recipients. Hopefully, the program can begin operating next year,” Pramono said.
