Jakarta (ANTARA) – Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo has floated a plan to establish a boxing facility in Manggarai, South Jakarta, as part of efforts to curb recurring brawls among local residents.
Speaking after inaugurating a boxing facility beneath a flyover in Kampung Melayu, East Jakarta, he acknowledged the need for stronger measures to prevent repeated clashes in Manggarai.
“We will certainly take a special approach to handling the Manggarai issue. If necessary, I will build a site or facility similar to this one in Manggarai,” he remarked in Kampung Melayu on Friday.
However, Pramono said he had observed a significant decline in brawls in Manggarai.
“Why is that so? Because young people there now have better spaces to gather and interact with one another,” the governor said.
He also pointed to Manggarai’s ongoing transit-oriented development, citing the recent inauguration of a Light Rail Transit (LRT) route serving the area.
“As we all know, Manggarai has emerged as a new hub after the inauguration of an LRT route connecting it to Kelapa Gading,” Pramono said.
He added that Manggarai is also one of the key transit points in Greater Jakarta’s electric commuter rail (KRL) network.
Earlier at the inauguration event, the governor said sports and boxing facilities had proven effective in reducing student brawls across East Jakarta, where more than 130 cases were recorded in 2025.
He noted that the figure had fallen to around 20 as of the end of October, attributing the decline to the operation of the Kampung Melayu facility and another one in Pasar Rebo, East Jakarta.
