Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Jakarta Metropolitan Police and Jakarta Military Command have made post-riot recovery in Jakarta a top priority, while also assessing the material and immaterial losses caused by the incident.
“We are calculating the material and immaterial losses suffered by the public as well as public facilities whose functions were disrupted due to the riots,” the Public Relations Head for Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Senior Commissioner Budi Hermanto, said this at a press conference here on Friday.
He said the psychological and immaterial impact on the public is relatively greater than physical losses alone.
“This can be seen from the emergence of public concern, one example being several schools coordinating to shift teaching and learning activities online,” Hermanto said.
Despite the incident, he affirmed that the security situation in Jakarta remained under control, with residents’ routine activities on Friday reported to have returned to normal, marked by increasing traffic mobility.
Regarding the presence of protesters, Central Jakarta Police reportedly took a persuasive, soft approach from the afternoon into the evening to urge the crowd to disperse from the location.
“The crowd was urged to leave the location because there were no speeches, no aspirations being conveyed, and no issues being raised,” he remarked.
Police also urged the public to remain calm, understand the situation, and not be easily provoked to help maintain a conducive situation in Jakarta.
Previously, the Jakarta Regional Metropolitan Police had detained 322 people suspected of being involved in the riots and the destruction of public facilities following a rally in front of the Parliament Building Complex here on Thursday (August 27).
He explained that the riots occurred after most of the protesters had dispersed.
A group of rioters then attempted to disrupt public security and order by committing vandalism, damaging public facilities belonging to the government and police, as well as throwing objects at officers in the field, he stated.
