Jakarta situation returns to normal after Thursday protest, police say

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesian police said public safety and order in Jakarta had returned to normal on Friday after mass demonstrations at the Parliament Complex the previous day.

National Police Public Information Bureau head Brig. Gen. Trunoyudo Wisnu Andiko said the national security situation remained stable and under control.

Police continued security operations to maintain public order and ensure daily activities were not disrupted by security-related incidents, Andiko said.

He said police would continue serving the public while working to preserve a safe and orderly environment across Jakarta.

Andiko added that public activities had resumed normally following Thursday’s demonstrations.

He urged residents to help maintain peace and order, saying public participation was important to preserving security in their respective communities.

Thursday’s large-scale demonstrations centered on demands from residents of Pati District, Central Java, including passage of the Asset Forfeiture Bill and capital punishment for corruption offenses.

House of Representatives leaders met representatives of the United Pati Community Alliance (APMB), which joined the protests under coordinator Supriyono, also known as Botok.

Around midday, Botok returned to the protesters and read a commitment signed by House leaders to pass the Asset Forfeiture Bill by Dec. 15, 2026.

Pati protesters began dispersing after the event, while students and other demonstrators continued gathering at the Parliament Complex into the afternoon.

Jakarta Metropolitan Police said officers had taken preventive measures to maintain order and avert security threats during Thursday’s protests, detaining 65 people.

Police said those detained were suspected of procuring or financing dangerous items, including Molotov cocktails and weapons, for use during the demonstrations.
