Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) has urged Papua police to conduct a thorough investigation into a suspected attack on its Jayapura office on Wednesday.
Komnas HAM Monitoring and Investigation Commissioner Saurlin P. Siagian said the suspected attack involved an unidentified person throwing what appeared to be a Molotov cocktail.
“The suspected attack involved an unidentified person throwing a bottle containing flammable liquid with a fuse, commonly known as a Molotov cocktail,” Saurlin said.
He said the object struck at least three motorcycles parked at the office but did not cause a fire.
Komnas HAM Papua staff did not see the perpetrator because the person fled immediately after throwing the object, Saurlin said.
The Papua Komnas HAM office reported the incident to police. Officers also visited the site and conducted a crime-scene investigation.
Saurlin urged police to conduct a thorough investigation to identify the perpetrator and prevent similar incidents from recurring.
“First, we hope Papua police immediately conduct a thorough investigation so the suspect can be identified and prosecuted, preventing a similar incident at the Papua representative office,” he said.
Komnas HAM also urged Papua police to ensure the safety and security of human rights personnel working in the province.
“We want Papua police to ensure the safety and security of human rights personnel stationed in Jayapura as they carry out their duties,” Saurlin said.
He said security guarantees were necessary to allow personnel to continue monitoring and overseeing human rights conditions in Papua.
Meanwhile, Jayapura City Police Chief Commissioner Fredrickus Maclarimboen said police could not yet confirm that the object thrown into the office yard was a Molotov cocktail.
Police secured broken bottle fragments from the scene and asked the Papua police forensic laboratory to examine their contents.
Investigators have also questioned four witnesses about the incident, he said.
The object was thrown at the Papua Komnas HAM office in Dok V Bawah, North Jayapura Subdistrict, Jayapura City, at about 10:15 a.m. local time on Wednesday.
