Magnitude 6.1 quake hits Sumba island, no tsunami potential

Jakarta (ANTARA) – A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck off Southwest Sumba District in East Nusa Tenggara Province on Sunday morning, with officials confirming no threat of a tsunami.

“The epicenter was at sea, 14 km southwest of Kodi, Southwest Sumba, at a depth of 10 km at coordinates 9.70 south latitude and 118.92 east longitude,” said Berton SP Panjaitan, acting head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency’s (BNPB) Data and Communications Center.

The quake struck at 5:55 a.m. local time, according to the agency.

“The quake is reported to have no tsunami potential,” Panjaitan said in a statement.

Preliminary monitoring showed strong shaking lasted about one minute across Southwest Sumba, West Sumba, and West Manggarai districts.

Some residents felt the tremor, but the situation remained calm with no reports of panic, Panjaitan noted.

Local disaster mitigation officials continue monitoring the area and have received no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

BNPB urged residents to remain calm, disregard unverified rumors, and rely exclusively on official updates.

If aftershocks occur, officials advised residents to stay clear of compromised structures and maintain distance from coastal areas.
