Kupang, NTT (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Mbay Village in Nagekeo District, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), triggering minor tsunami waves across several coastal areas.
The agency issued a Level II tsunami warning after the tremor occurred at 5:58 a.m. Central Indonesian Time (WITA) on Saturday.
Head of Kupang Geophysics Station Arief Tyastama said the epicenter was located at 8.41 degrees south latitude and 121.39 degrees east longitude.
“It was located approximately 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) off the coast of Mbay, Nagekeo, at a depth of 15 kilometers (9.3 miles),” Tyastama noted.
Tsunami alerts were issued for at least 22 cities, districts, and islands across NTT, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), South Sulawesi, and Southeast Sulawesi. Eight areas were placed under a Level II alert, while 14 were placed under a Level I alert.

In NTT, the regions placed under Level II status included the northern Manggarai, Ngada, west Manggarai, Ende, and Sikka. Meanwhile, in South Sulawesi, the alert covered the districts of Selayar, Jeneponto, and Bantaeng.
Aftershocks continued to rock the region until at least 7:02 a.m. WITA. Tremors were felt across Flores Island, as well as in parts of the Sumba, Adonara, and Solor islands.
As of 7:28 a.m. WITA, the BMKG confirmed tidal shifts had reached multiple coastal regions. In Sikka, NTT, waves measuring 0.19 and 0.38 meters (0.6 and 1.2 feet) were recorded at 6:03 a.m. and 6:16 a.m. WITA, respectively.
The waves also reached other areas in NTT, including East Flores at a height of 0.25 meters (0.8 feet) at 6:24 a.m. WITA, Labuan Bajo at 0.36 meters (1.1 feet) at 6:26 a.m. WITA, and Alor at 0.14 meters (0.5 feet) at 6:41 a.m. WITA.
The highest recorded wave reached Ende, NTT, measuring 0.94 meters (3 feet) at 6:27 a.m. WITA.
Minor shifts were also detected in the neighboring NTB province, including a 0.17-meter (0.6-foot) wave in Dompu at 6:29 a.m. WITA. The agency has since lifted all tsunami warnings.
