Medan police seize 93 kg of cannabis after car chase

Medan, N Sumatra (ANTARA) – Medan City Police seized 93 kilograms of cannabis after a car chase on AH Nasution Road in Medan, North Sumatra, arresting two men from Aceh, authorities said here Friday.

“The operation resulted in the arrest of two men, identified by their initials K, 30, and AR, 19, both from Aceh Province,” Medan City Police Narcotics Chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Rafli Yusuf Nugraha said.

He said the seizure followed an early-August raid on a suspected drug den in the Tembung railway corridor.

“From that operation, we received information about a planned shipment of a large quantity of cannabis to Tembung,” Rafli said.

Based on the information, narcotics officers began surveillance from Dairi District, which borders Aceh, toward Medan, the capital of North Sumatra Province, he said.

Officers identified a vehicle suspected of carrying drugs and followed it to determine the shipment’s destination and intended recipient.

As the vehicle traveled along AH Nasution Road, officers suspected the driver had spotted police and tried to flee.

Police then moved to stop the vehicle. The suspects drove onto the sidewalk but were stopped after officers blocked their escape routes.

“We moved to stop them, but they tried to flee again via the sidewalk. Our team moved faster and blocked every escape route,” he said.

Police arrested K and AR after stopping the vehicle.

Officers found 93 packages of dried cannabis weighing about 93 kilograms inside the vehicle, packed in five burlap sacks.

Preliminary questioning showed the cannabis was destined for Tembung for distribution, Rafli said.

Police are continuing their investigation to identify and arrest other people allegedly involved in the drug shipment network.

“We are still pursuing other suspects whose identities we have identified,” he said.

Rafli said police would continue targeting drug trafficking networks, particularly those supplying narcotics to Medan.

“We will catch suspects wherever they try to flee. To the public, drugs are not an option, they are the beginning of ruin,” he said.

The seizure followed an earlier raid on a suspected drug den near the Tembung railway tracks, where police seized three kilograms of cannabis and arrested three suspects.
