Jakarta (ANTARA) – German Chancellor Angela Merkel will participate in a conversation with New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern at the APEC CEO Summit 2021 and provide a European perspective on the APEC region and issues.
Merkel will discuss the state of the world with and post-COVID with New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on day two of the summit, which will be hosted in Auckland, New Zealand on November 11 and 12, 2021, according to a release issued by APEC New Zealand and received here on Thursday.
In a conversation facilitated by Microsoft president and vice chair Brad Smith, the two leaders will discuss global recovery and consider opportunities for APEC and Europe to work together as the world builds back after the global pandemic.
Drawing on her experience in Germany and within the European Union, Chancellor Merkel will discuss how cooperation and collaboration are key to progress, while also providing a view of the APEC region and its issues from the position of a European leader.
Merkel has been Chancellor of Germany since November 2005. She is the first woman and the first East German to hold the office.
In foreign policy, Merkel has emphasized international cooperation, both in the context of the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and strengthening transatlantic economic relations.
In 2008, Merkel served as president of the European Council and played a central role in the negotiation of the Treaty of Lisbon and the Berlin Declaration.
Merkel played a crucial role in managing the global financial crisis of 2007-2008 and the European debt crisis.
She has served as a senior G7 leader since 2014, and earlier from 2011 to 2012. In 2014, she became the longest-serving incumbent head of government in the European Union.
In October 2018, Merkel announced that she would stand down as the leader of the CDU party at its convention and would not seek a fifth term as Chancellor in the 2021 federal election.
She continues to serve as chancellor while the process of formation of a new government continues.
The APEC CEO Summit is the most influential meeting of businesses and governments in the Asia-Pacific.
The forum provides opportunities for governance, chief executives, and world business leaders to engage with each other and with the leaders of APEC economies.
Each year, the CEO Summit draws the region’s business leaders, intellectuals, and media personalities for interactive discussions with APEC leaders on key trade and economic issues facing the Asia-Pacific.
