Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s Environment Minister Moh Jumhur Hidayat has voiced support for strengthening the management ecosystem for medical and hazardous waste, emphasising a more transparent and sustainable approach to safeguard both the public and the environment.
In a statement received in Jakarta, Hidayat explained the effort relies on three key pillars: traceability, waste mass balance, and consistent law enforcement.
Speaking during a visit to a waste processing facility of PT Prasadha Pamunah Limbah Industri (PPLI) in Bogor District, West Java, on Thursday, he noted the three pillars are necessary to ensure that every waste stream can be traced and accounted for.
At the same time, he added that they will help prevent the risk of pollution and management abuses.
Hidayat also praised PPLI has more than three decades of experience as one of Indonesia’s pioneers in integrated hazardous and medical waste management.

He called for maintaining the high standards and urged other industry players to replicate the company’s model of responsible and sustainable integrated management practices.
Hidayat also highlighted potential risks in the supply chain for used medical materials with economic value. According to him, such materials must not be repurposed or traded recklessly without being processed in accordance with safety and environmental protection standards.
Furthermore, he stressed that managing used medical materials requires ensuring adequate decontamination and sterilisation before they can enter the recycling or reuse process.
Lastly, he reminded waste generators to establish direct contracts with waste processors or recycling facilities.
On the same occasion, PPLI President Director Takanobu Tachikawa welcomed the minister’s direction, affirming the company’s readiness to support government efforts to bolster end-to-end hazardous waste management systems.
