Minister orders online learning for schools impacted by Krakatau ash

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Primary and Secondary Education Minister Abdul Mu’ti has ordered schools heavily affected by Mount Anak Krakatau’s eruption to shift classes online, prioritizing student and teacher safety.

Speaking to journalists here Sunday, Mu’ti said affected schools could conduct lessons from home online or move classes to other safe locations equipped for distance learning.

He identified areas with heavy ash exposure, including Serang District in Banten and Tanggamus District, Bandar Lampung and South Lampung in Lampung.

For areas where in-person classes remain safe, Mu’ti instructed schools to strictly enforce health and safety protocols.

Those measures include wearing masks, staying indoors, closing doors and windows, and avoiding activities that could endanger students and other school community members.

Mu’ti also gave schools flexibility to shorten class hours rather than follow normal full-day schedules.

He urged teachers to include disaster preparedness lessons so students can remain calm and understand basic self-rescue procedures.

Mu’ti said local governments would determine how long online learning should continue based on conditions and the movement of volcanic ash.

He said no students or teachers had died and no school infrastructure damage had been reported in affected areas, including Banten and Lampung.

Mu’ti said protecting the health and safety of students, teachers and other school staff remained the government’s top priority.
