Minister urges restraint as Jakarta police probe post-rally violence

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s coordinating law minister urged the public to reject unverified claims about violent incidents following demonstrations in Jakarta on August 27, saying authorities are still investigating two cases.

Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra said here Sunday that Jakarta police were investigating the death of Bambang and an assault on 12th-grade student Faturrohman.

“Authorities are investigating the cases to reach comprehensive conclusions and identify those behind and responsible for the violence,” Yusril said, promising firm legal action against anyone found guilty.

His statement followed speculation on social media that certain groups or organizations were involved in the violent incidents.

“Law enforcement authorities are not accusing anyone, whether individuals, groups or community organizations. I urge residents not to be easily provoked by unverified information,” Yusril said.

Yusril said both incidents occurred during clashes involving residents in Pejompongan after protesters dispersed from the House of Representatives (DPR).

He urged the public not to use the cases to seek revenge or provoke further violence.

“I call on all elements of society to remain calm. I thank demonstrators from Pati and other regions, as well as students, for protesting peacefully,” he said.

Yusril expressed hope that authorities would soon gather sufficient evidence and facts to identify those behind the violence and hold them accountable.

“We cannot allow these cases under investigation to trigger further unrest and violence. Let us leave the process to law enforcement and work together to maintain public peace and order,” he said.
