Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Immigration and Corrections Ministry, together with the Health Ministry, held free cataract screenings and health checks to mark the 81st Indonesian Independence Day anniversary at Cipinang Correctional General Hospital here on Monday.
The free cataract and health screenings target not only inmates from detention centers and prisons across Jakarta, as well as correctional officers, but also members of the public.
Head of Cipinang Correctional General Hospital Ummu Salamah said 81 members of the public were served, matching the number of inmates also treated.
She said the free cataract and health screenings involved doctors from Cipinang Correctional Hospital as well as the Indonesian Ophthalmologists Association Foundation.
Salamah said that as of 9:15 a.m. local time, seven of the 17 inmates who underwent cataract examinations had already completed cataract surgery.
According to her, free health screenings are held routinely every month, while the cataract screening was being held for the first time.
“In line with directions from the Immigration and Corrections Minister, free health checks and social assistance are carried out routinely every month. This is the first year for cataract screenings,” she said.
Salamah said free health and cataract screenings for the public are held at the hospital’s outpatient clinic at the front of the building, while inmates are treated separately in a section at the back.
“Why do we separate them? Because they have inmate status and require special handling,” she said.​​​​​​​
Cipinang Correctional Hospital has been open to the public since 2022. Previously, the facility served only inmates from detention centers and prisons across Jakarta.
“The hospital provides all types of health services, and we specifically serve as a referral center for tuberculosis and HIV examinations, as well as dental care,” she said.
