Ministry delivers 23.2 million liters of water to drought-hit areas

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s Public Works Ministry has distributed 23.2 million liters of clean water to drought-hit communities in Central Java and East Java, helping residents cope with water shortages.

Speaking in Jakarta on Friday, Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo said clean water was essential for residents’ daily needs and that assistance would be deployed quickly to affected communities.

In Central Java, about 22.77 million liters were delivered to 12 drought-hit areas, benefiting around 314,000 people.

Cilacap received about 7.4 million liters since June, serving approximately 93,000 residents. In Pekalongan, 1.2 million liters were distributed to about 5,149 residents.

The ministry provided water through its Central Java Center for Building, Infrastructure and Area Development, working with provincial and district disaster management agencies.

In East Java, the ministry used 15 tanker trucks to distribute water to about 58,000 residents, as the province recorded 56 drought cases as of September 16.

Through its East Java center, the ministry delivered about 88,000 liters to 4,713 residents in Kunjorowesi Village, Mojokerto District, while Duyung villagers received about 52,000 liters.

Another 56,000 liters were distributed to about 8,147 residents in Pamekasan District, the ministry said.

The ministry is coordinating with regional governments and monitoring water sources to tailor assistance and interventions to conditions in each drought-hit area.

The ministry adopts this approach in accordance with President Prabowo Subianto’s directive for government institutions to mitigate the impacts of El Niño and ensure that people’s needs are met amid heat and drought risks.
