The temporary closure of all TNGGP hiking trails was also intended to support the area’s post-fire recovery.
Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Forestry Ministry has moved quickly to contain a land fire at Surya Kencana West Square in Mount Gede Pangrango National Park (TNGGP) before it could spread further into the forest.
Head of the Mount Gede Pangrango National Park Center (BBTNGGP) Sadtata Noor Adirahmanta said firefighting efforts began on Thursday, according to a statement received here on Saturday.
As a precautionary measure, Adirahmanta said, all TNGGP hiking trails were temporarily closed from August 7 to 11, 2026.
“Thanks to the readiness of officers, forest ranger partner communities (MMP), and volunteers on the ground, the fire was fully extinguished,” he said.
Adirahmanta added that teams would remain on standby and conduct monitoring and patrols in shifts over the next three days to ensure the area remains safe and to detect any potential hotspots.
He explained that the fire was first reported to officers at the Gunung Putri Resort at 3:15 p.m. local time by members of the public managing the base camp. Following the report, Forestry Ministry personnel, together with MMP members and volunteers, were immediately deployed to the site to fight the fire.
Based on field monitoring, Adirahmanta said, the affected area was estimated at around one hectare. The fire mainly burned dry grass and a small amount of woody vegetation within a radius of about five meters from the edelweiss savanna toward the forest.
Although the fire has been extinguished, the Forestry Ministry has taken preventive measures to ensure the area is safe and protect hikers and the public.
The temporary closure of all TNGGP hiking trails was also intended to support the area’s post-fire recovery.
