Jakarta (ANTARA) – Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, erupted on Friday morning, sending an ash column about 1 km above its peak during an eruption lasting six minutes.
Lana Saria, head of the Geological Agency at the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, said the eruption occurred at 7:35 a.m. local time, sending thick ash southwest and west.
“The eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 14.8 mm and lasted about six minutes and four seconds,” she said.
Lewotobi Laki-laki is currently at Level III, or Alert, and residents and tourists are prohibited from conducting activities within five km of the eruption center.
The Geological Agency urged residents near the volcano to wear masks or cover their noses and mouths to protect against the respiratory hazards posed by volcanic ash.
Residents were also urged to watch for rain-triggered lahars along rivers originating from the summit during heavy rain, particularly around Dulipali, Padang Pasir, Nobo, Nurabelen, Klatanlo, Hokeng Jaya, Boru and Nawakote.
The agency urged residents to remain calm, avoid unverified information and follow instructions from local authorities and the Lewotobi Laki-laki monitoring post in East Flores.
“The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation will coordinate with the East Nusa Tenggara disaster agency and local authorities to provide information on Lewotobi Laki-laki’s activity,” Lana said.
