Jakarta (ANTARA) – People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Deputy Speaker Lestari Moerdijat assessed that the role of the younger generation is crucial to boosting digital literacy and accelerating the transformation process that can push growth in Indonesia’s several sectors.
“The active role of the younger generation in the process of transformation in various sectors through digital literacy is a strategic step that must be realized immediately,” Moerdijat noted in a written statement here on Monday.
The MPR deputy speaker cited data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS) that showed 27.94 percent of the Indonesian population are people born between 1997 and 2012. Meanwhile, according to the Home Affairs Ministry’s data, the generation Z population aged 10-24 years reached 68,662,815 as of December 31, 2021.
Moerdijat noted that members of generation Z, who are familiar with gadgets from an early age, can play an active role in the process of improving the community’s digital literacy.
“Of course, it must be followed by the strengthening of noble values of nationalism in the process,” she stated.
Moerdijat opined that the current utilization of digital technology in various sectors can expedite the transformation process in the country’s development.
She believes that the younger generation, who are digitally literate and have strong national values, can play a role as agents of change in the transformation process to accelerate the achievement of the development targets that have been set.
The MPR deputy speaker affirmed that a strategy was in place to develop the younger generation to become agents of change through active participation in strengthening digital literacy that can be realized from an early age through the educational curriculum and teaching process in schools.
In addition, the involvement of youth communities at the neighborhood level in strengthening the community’s digital literacy is deemed necessary to increase the number of digitally literate people, she stated.
She assessed that the collaboration of stakeholders and the community in developing the younger generation to become the agents of change is crucial in a bid to improve the community’s digital literacy.
Moerdijat expressed hope that with an improvement in the community’s digital literacy, Indonesia’s efforts to accelerate development in several sectors would be realized.
