Jakarta (ANTARA) – No Indonesians were among the foreign nationals reported dead or missing after a flash flood swept through the China-Nepal border area on Wednesday, Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry confirmed.
Director for the protection of Indonesians at the ministry, Heni Hamidah, said that Indonesian embassies in Beijing and Dhaka continue their intensive monitoring of the conditions of Indonesians in Nepal after the tragedy.
“Based on the observation and communication with related parties, we received no reports about any Indonesians affected by the disaster so far,” Hamidah stated in response to ANTARA’s query on Thursday.
The Indonesian Embassy in Dhaka is closely monitoring Indonesian nationals visiting Nepal as tourists, particularly those engaging in hiking activities. They also issued a notice to all travel agents to immediately report the location and condition of Indonesians participating in their tour.
According to the Foreign Ministry data, some 45 Indonesian nationals are residing in Nepal, mostly in Kathmandu and working in the hotel sector, she added.
Following the disaster, Indonesian embassies in Beijing and Dhaka urged Indonesians to remain alert, follow instructions from the local authorities, avoid affected areas, and monitor updates from official sources.
“The Indonesian embassies in Beijing and Dhaka will continue the developing situation and maintain communication with communities of Indonesians,” Hamidah said.
In emergency situations, Indonesians in Nepal can contact the embassy in Dhaka through +880 161-4444-552, while Indonesians in China can connect with the embassy in Beijing at +8618610455488.
Around 160 people have been killed and hundreds are missing following a flash flood in central Nepal, local police and tourism authorities said Wednesday, as reported by Kyodo.
Of the 384 missing, around 290 are foreign tourists from countries including India, Malaysia, Britain, and the United States, according to Nepalese authorities.
The Bhotekoshi River in Nepal’s mountainous Rasuwa region overflowed, damaging houses and infrastructure, including a hydroelectric power station.
Meanwhile, Xinhua News Agency said three people were killed and 265 others unaccounted for following a mudslide in Shigatse, a major city in the country’s autonomous region of Tibet. The river flows from the region into Nepal.
