North Jakarta crash: 3 workers killed as truck hits toll road crew

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Three toll road maintenance workers were killed after a wing-box truck crashed into them on the Wiyoto Wiyono Toll Road in North Jakarta on Wednesday (September 9) night, police said Thursday.

The crash occurred at kilometer 20.200A on the Tanjung Priok-to-Pluit route and involved the truck and a Citra Marga operational pickup, Jakarta Metropolitan Police Traffic Directorate Highway Patrol Unit Chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Rieki Indra Brata Manggala said.

“Police suspect the wing-box truck driver experienced microsleep, hit traffic cones, and then crashed into the operational pickup and workers repairing the toll road,” he said.

Rieki said the crash occurred at 11:40 p.m. when truck B 9334 DU, driven by Ferdy Yulianto Ardi, was traveling in the first lane toward Pluit.

“Upon reaching the site, the driver lost concentration and crashed into Citra Marga’s operational vehicle, B 9468 UAO, which was parked for road repairs,” he said.

Two workers, Suroto, a concrete supervisor, and Yunus, a daily contract worker, were pronounced dead at the scene. Another worker, Baharudin, died while receiving treatment at Koja Regional General Hospital in North Jakarta.

“Besides the fatalities, two other project workers were injured. Sugito suffered injuries to his head, back, hands, and right leg,” Rieki said.

Another worker, Akbar, suffered a sprain and abrasions after being thrown from the vehicle and falling into Ancol Creek beneath the toll road.

Police and toll road operators evacuated the victims and secured the vehicles involved to prevent prolonged traffic congestion.

The truck sustained front-end damage, while the operational pickup suffered severe damage to its rear.

“The case and evidence have been handed over to the North Jakarta Traffic Accident Unit for further investigation,” Rieki said.
