NTT quake death toll at 111 as aftershocks reach 8,794: BNPB

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported that the death toll from the 7.7-magnitude earthquake on Flores Island, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), remained at 111 as of Friday afternoon, while thousands of aftershocks continued to rattle the area.

The Acting Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center, Berton SP Panjaitan, said at a press conference on Friday that thousands of aftershocks had been recorded following the main earthquake on August 15, and were expected to persist for another month.

“To date, after the 7.7 magnitude earthquake on August 15, 2026, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has recorded 8,794 aftershocks,” he noted.

Panjaitan explained that of the total 8,794 aftershocks, magnitude strengths ranged from 1.0 to a peak of 6.2, with 152 felt by the public.

“Subsequent seismic activity is predicted by experts to continue for 3 to 4 weeks after the main earthquake,” he continued.

Manggarai District reported the highest number of fatalities at 45, followed by East Manggarai with 38 and Nagekeo with 13, out of 111 total deaths.

By gender, women accounted for 56.4 percent of the victims, while men represented 43.6 percent. Elderly victims made up the largest age group at 45 percent, followed by adults at 37 percent.

Furthermore, Panjaitan said that the number of residents staying at evacuation shelters had begun to decline. In Sikka District, 712 evacuees were reported to have returned home, bringing the total number of evacuees in East Nusa Tenggara to 175,909.

The BNPB therefore encouraged evacuees who remain hesitant or afraid to return home to utilize centralized evacuation shelters, where they can access logistical supplies, clean water, sanitation facilities, public kitchens, and basic health services.
