Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Indonesian Ombudsman (Ombudsman RI) has urged regional governments to strengthen basic logistics systems to protect residents during the forest and land fire emergency response period.
Ombudsman RI has carried out public service monitoring across nine fire-affected provinces, focusing on six key areas: public health protection, emergency safety and preparedness, access to clean water and basic needs, continuity of public services, information and complaint channels, and resource and accountability coordination.
“We also re-examined the aspects of clean water, sanitation, and basic needs fulfillment. Most regions still showed a mediocre response,” said Ombudsman RI member Robert Na Endi Jaweng during a press conference in Jakarta on Wednesday.
He explained that the majority of regional governments were still slow to respond to these essential logistical needs.
Monitoring results showed that infrastructure readiness to support basic needs varied across regions.
According to him, only a handful of regions demonstrated optimal measures in coordinating clean water supplies for residents affected by haze and drought.
West Kalimantan received a positive note from Ombudsman RI as it has moved swiftly to coordinate with relevant parties, such as regional water utility companies, to ensure clean water supplies for affected communities.
However, conditions differed in other regions. Based on data gathered by Ombudsman RI across four provinces, South Kalimantan’s distribution readiness was deemed inadequate, Maluku was in a relatively adequate position, and West Sulawesi showed fairly good distribution readiness.
Meanwhile, conclusions for the remaining five provinces could not yet be fully drawn, as field reports from regional representative offices were still undergoing further verification.
At Wednesday’s press conference, Ombudsman RI outlined the results of monitoring the impact of forest and land fires on public services in nine provinces: Jambi, Bangka Belitung Islands, West Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, Southeast Sulawesi, Gorontalo, West Sulawesi, Maluku, and North Maluku.
