Palestinian refugee temporarily held in Bali over immigration rules

Badung, Bali (ANTARA) – Denpasar Immigration Detention Center in Bali is temporarily holding a Palestinian refugee for further examination after he was suspected of violating Indonesian immigration rules, an official said here Friday.

Denpasar Immigration Detention Center Chief Teguh Mentalyadi said Palestinian national, MAFA was formally detained for further examination after being held temporarily on Wednesday, September 9.

The 35-year-old man was reported by residents for allegedly operating as a tourism services vendor in Jungutbatu Village on Nusa Lembongan Island, Klungkung District.

Officials from the Klungkung Immigration Office conducted a field inspection and found evidence suggesting he had engaged in activities that violated immigration regulations.

Further examination found that MAFA had promoted tourism packages through social media, Teguh said.

The Klungkung Immigration Office determined that MAFA had violated immigration rules under Article 75 (1) of Law No. 6 of 2011 on Immigration.

He was subsequently transferred to the Denpasar Immigration Detention Center in Jimbaran, Badung District.

“We are still examining the case and determining further measures,” Teguh said.

Teguh said further action was needed because MAFA was also known to have refugee status.

The Denpasar Immigration Detention Center will therefore coordinate with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and other relevant parties to ensure further immigration measures comply with applicable regulations.

“We will continue to support the handling of foreign nationals referred to us in accordance with applicable immigration regulations,” Teguh said.
