Papua Governor calls 2026 Economic Census data investment

Jayapura (ANTARA) – Papua Governor Mathius D. Fakhiri said the 2026 Economic Census (SE2026) will provide vital data for shaping future development policies and mapping the province’s economic potential.

“Today’s data will serve as the basis for Papua’s future policies. Therefore, the 2026 Economic Census is an investment in data for Papua’s future,” Fakhiri said here Monday.

Fakhiri said the census would identify businesses, economic structures and potential sectors that could support his vision of a smart, prosperous and harmonious Papua, known as Papua CERAH.

“The economic census is not solely BPS’ responsibility. It requires all stakeholders to produce complete and accurate data reflecting conditions in Papua,” he said.

Therefore, SE2026 is a collective effort involving BPS and other stakeholders to ensure its successful implementation, Fakhiri said.

“Changes in Papua’s administrative boundaries following the creation of new autonomous regions have also affected economic structures and business activity,” he said.

“Data must therefore be updated to ensure development policies align with people’s conditions and needs,” he added.

Outdated data could result in development policies that fail to address their intended targets, Fakhiri said.

Comprehensive data, meanwhile, can support an economy based on leading commodities and help establish new centers of economic growth, he said.

“SE2026 is highly strategic and provides an important opportunity to redraw Papua’s economic map. Comprehensive data can sharpen policies to realize Papua CERAH,” Fakhiri said.
