Police probe Bali Airport Terminal’s fire cause

Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA) – Police are investigating a fire that ravaged a tenant outlet on the second floor of the international terminal at Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport on Thursday (July 30) that caused estimated losses of Rp10 million (around US$610).

No fatalities were reported in the Thursday night incident and investigators from the airport police unit are examining the cause, police spokesman First Inspector I Gede Suka Artana said.

“Currently, investigators are still conducting inquiries and gathering information related to the fire,” Artana said in Denpasar on Saturday.

The preliminary assessment indicated the fire started from a meat grill machine before spreading through an exhaust ventilation system.

Artana explained the blaze began while an employee was operating the grill machine, which experienced abnormal temperature fluctuations before flames intensified and spread into the exhaust channel.

The employee immediately turned off the stove and exhaust panel, then attempted initial firefighting using a portable fire extinguisher.

The grill fire was extinguished, but flames inside the exhaust duct remained inaccessible, prompting workers to remove parts of the ceiling to help firefighters reach the source.

Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) personnel arrived and carried out further firefighting operations, while the terminal’s automatic sprinkler system activated to prevent the blaze from spreading.

The fire was fully extinguished at around 10:10 p.m. local time, followed by smoke removal using blowers, police said.

During the response, airport police and related agencies secured the scene, installed police lines, collected evidence and questioned several witnesses as part of the investigation.

Police said the incident caused no deaths or injuries. Material losses were temporarily estimated at about Rp10 million (around US$610), although the investigation into the cause remains ongoing.

Authorities are continuing to examine evidence and witness statements to determine the exact cause of the fire at the international terminal outlet.
