Police probe US$72,200 robbery targeting foreign nationals in Karawang

Karawang, West Java (ANTARA) – Police in Karawang City, West Java, are investigating a robbery in which about 1.3 billion rupiah (US$72,200) in cash was stolen from a car carrying foreign nationals in Cikampek, authorities said.

“We have received a police report regarding the incident, and an investigation is underway,” Karawang Police Criminal Investigation Unit Head Commissioner Ali Jupri said in Karawang on Tuesday.

The robbery occurred Monday, September 28, on Jalan Raya Dawuan Kalihurip in Cikampek, Karawang District, based on a police report, he said.

The incident began when an electric vehicle carrying three victims, including two foreign nationals, was traveling along the Dawuan highway in Cikampek.

The victims had just withdrawn 1.9 billion rupiah (US$105,600) in company cash from a private bank in Cikampek, according to their statements to police.

The cash was kept in two bags containing 600 million rupiah (US$33,300) and 1.3 billion rupiah, respectively.

While traveling along Jalan Raya Dawuan near the Kalihurip toll gate, two unidentified men on a motorcycle approached the victims’ vehicle.

“The motorcyclist told the victims that their vehicle’s rear tire was flat,” Ali said.

The vehicle stopped and all three victims got out to check the rear tire. Another perpetrator then smashed the car’s right-side window and stole the bag containing 1.3 billion rupiah (US$72,200).

“Based on the victims’ accounts, the perpetrators are suspected to be a syndicate of four or more people who followed them from the bank,” Ali said.

Karawang police are continuing their investigation by examining the crime scene and questioning several witnesses.
