Prabowo asks Babinsa officers to educate villagers on wildfire risks

Jakarta (ANTARA) – President Prabowo Subianto has asked Indonesian Defense Forces’ (TNI’s) village development non-commissioned (Babinsa) officers to educate residents about the dangers of forest and land fires, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said.

Teddy said Prabowo raised the issue during a meeting with the military commander and service chiefs, defense and higher education ministers, and the state secretary in Hambalang, West Java, on Saturday (29/8).

“The president wants Babinsa officers to educate villagers about the dangers of forest fires and encourage them to work together to protect our forests and land,” Teddy said.

Prabowo wants the education campaign on forest-fire risks to reach communities directly at the village level through Babinsa officers, Teddy said.

The meeting also covered efforts to respond to several disasters, including the aftermath of the earthquake in Flores and the eruption of Mount Merapi.

Prabowo also asked for an update on efforts to adjust recruitment requirements for members of remote Dayak communities seeking to join the Indonesian military.
