Jakarta (ANTARA) – President Prabowo Subianto and the government are closely monitoring the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau and its potential impacts, including the spread of volcanic ash, a government official said on Sunday.
Muhammad Qodari, head of the Indonesian Government Communications Agency (Bakom RI), said authorities were monitoring developments and providing regular updates on the volcano’s activity and its impacts.
“Mr. President and the government are closely monitoring developments in the activity of Mount Anak Krakatau, as well as any potential impacts,” Qodari said at a press conference.
He said relevant agencies and local administrations were also involved in monitoring the situation and responding to the impacts of the eruption based on data from technical agencies.
The government has taken mitigation measures, including adjustments to transportation activities to anticipate the impacts of the eruption.
“The safety and security of the public are the top priorities of the President and the government,” Qodari said.
Qodari urged the public to remain calm and vigilant as volcanic ash continues to fall. In line with recommendations from the Health Ministry, people in affected areas are advised to wear masks and protective eyewear when engaging in outdoor activities.
Residents are also advised to keep windows and glass doors closed to prevent volcanic ash from entering buildings.
In addition, people in affected areas are encouraged to maintain an adequate supply of clean water and wash their faces after returning home from outdoor activities.
Earlier, the government temporarily closed four airports in Banten, Jakarta, and Lampung due to the spread of volcanic ash in the airspace.
The four airports are Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Halim Perdanakusuma Airport, Radin Inten II Airport in Lampung, and Budiarto Airport in Curug.
