Prabowo hails Indonesia’s historic victory at the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup

Jakarta (ANTARA) – President Prabowo Subianto described Indonesia’s victory over Thailand at the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup final as historic, securing the country’s first-ever title in a FIFA international tournament.

“This is a proud achievement and an example of the determination to never give up. We have demonstrated that success is within our reach and this is the first time in history that Indonesia has secured a victory in a FIFA international match,” Prabowo said after the match at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK) in Jakarta on Monday (October 5).

Prabowo also expressed his joy and gratitude for the Indonesian players’ efforts in securing the victory.

“Yes, we are happy, we are grateful, we are proud of our team’s efforts. They did not give up until the final seconds,” he continued.

Indonesia won the tournament after defeating Thailand 4-2 in a penalty shootout, after the two teams had played to a 2-2 draw after extra time.

Indonesia took the lead through Dean James in the 84th minute, before Thailand leveled the score through Iklas Sanron two minutes later.

In the extra time, Thailand moved ahead through Peeradol Chamraratsame in the 111th minute, before Elkan Baggott brought Indonesia level again in the 114th minute.

In the penalty shootout, four Indonesian penalty takers, Kevin Diks, Dean James, Elkan Baggott, and Shayne Pattynama, successfully converted their attempts.

Meanwhile, two Thai penalty takers, Sarach Yooyen and Nattaphon Sayriya, failed to score. Sarach’s shot hit the post, while Sayriya’s effort was saved by Emil Audero.

Indonesia ultimately secured the victory and the championship.

After the match, President Prabowo, along with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, presented the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup trophy to Indonesian national team captain Kevin Diks as a symbol of victory.

Before the trophy ceremony, Prabowo and Infantino handed medals to the referee, Thai players, and members of the Indonesian national team as part of the post-match ceremony.

Prabowo also joined the celebrations as Diks and his Indonesian teammates hoisted the trophy.
