Prabowo invites Nobel laureates to work with Indonesian researchers

Jakarta (ANTARA) – President Prabowo Subianto invited Nobel laureates to collaborate with Indonesian researchers and academics to strengthen the country’s research ecosystem and develop scientific talent.

The invitation came as Prabowo welcomed Timor-Leste President Jose Ramos-Horta and several Nobel laureates at the State Palace on Friday, Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Head Arif Satria said.

Satria said Prabowo encouraged the laureates to work with Indonesian researchers and academics, reflecting his view that they could help strengthen the country’s scientific talent.

Prabowo also expressed hope that the proposed cooperation could be implemented soon, Satria said.

Satria said BRIN had already worked with several Nobel laureates, including Japanese chemist Susumu Kitagawa on natural gas research using metal-organic framework technology.

Kitagawa is establishing a sister laboratory in Indonesia to explore producing natural gas at lower pressure using his invention, Satria said.

Prabowo also told the laureates that Indonesia followed a good-neighbor policy by strengthening science and technology cooperation with Southeast Asian countries.

He outlined several government priorities, including the free nutritious meals program, fishermen’s villages and environmental conservation.

After learning that the laureates had visited a conservation site in Lampung, Prabowo reaffirmed his commitment to protecting Indonesia’s flora and fauna, Satria said.

Ramos-Horta, who received the Nobel Peace Prize, attended the meeting alongside fellow Nobel Peace Prize laureate Kailash Satyarthi.

Other laureates at the meeting included chemistry laureates Frances H. Arnold and Benjamin List; medicine laureate Tim Hunt; physics laureate Brian P. Schmidt; and economics laureates Robert C. Merton and James A. Robinson.
