Prabowo pushes green economy with focus on public welfare

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto reaffirmed the government’s commitment to advancing the green economy by strengthening the country’s carbon economic value framework so that communities can benefit more from emission reduction efforts.

In his State of the Nation Address in Jakarta on Friday, Prabowo highlighted the Carbon Unit Registration System (SRUK), launched on July 9, 2026, as a major step in Indonesia’s transition toward a green economy.

“We are also promoting the green economy. The Carbon Unit Registration System is being implemented for the first time in Indonesia, and we have established a carbon value exchange that adopts global carbon standards,” the President said.

He made the remarks during the 2026 Annual Session of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR RI) and the Joint Session of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) and the Regional Representatives Council (DPD RI) at the Parliament Complex in Jakarta.

Prabowo underscored the importance of continued efforts to protect Indonesia’s vast forest areas across the country to help absorb and control global carbon emissions as part of broader efforts to address climate change.

He also highlighted Indonesia’s potential to benefit from climate action, including incentives linked to the country’s performance in preserving ecosystems that play an important role in carbon sequestration.

“We are safeguarding forests, including protected forests. In other words, we are reducing carbon emissions, for which we are rewarded by countries that produce high volumes of emissions,” the President explained.

Against this backdrop, Prabowo called for a balance between environmental protection and public welfare, ensuring that conservation efforts provide tangible benefits to communities.

“The green economy must benefit our people,” he said, adding that Indonesia’s green economy framework is oriented toward “generating added value” for society.

His annual address formed part of the state agenda marking Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day.
