Prabowo says junior judges’ pay rises 280 percent

Jakarta (ANTARA) – President Prabowo Subianto said on Friday that the government had raised the pay of the most junior judges by 280 percent, putting their earnings above the ASEAN average.

“Junior judges’ earnings have risen 280 percent, the highest increase in decades. Their earnings are now above the ASEAN average,” Prabowo said.

He made the remarks during his State of the Nation Address at the 2026 Annual Session of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) in Jakarta.

The pay increases were part of efforts to improve judges’ welfare while safeguarding the independence of the judiciary, he said.

The increase was also reflected in the salary of Indonesia’s Supreme Court chief, which he said was now higher than that of Singapore’s chief justice.

“The Supreme Court chief has reported to me that his earnings are higher than those of Singapore’s Supreme Court chief,” Prabowo added.

Prabowo stressed, however, that improved welfare must be accompanied by accountability in carrying out judicial duties.

“We must uphold the rule of law and judicial independence. The government will continue improving judges’ welfare, but independence does not mean judges are free from accountability,” he said.

The MPR, House of Representatives (DPR) and Regional Representatives Council (DPD) held their annual and joint sessions Friday, including Prabowo’s address on government performance and Indonesia’s 81st Independence Anniversary.

The government also planned to show a video highlighting its performance during the sessions.

The annual sessions are state events marking Indonesia’s 81st Independence Anniversary under the theme “A Sovereign, Just and Prosperous Indonesia.”
