Prabowo targets full nationwide school revitalization by 2029

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto aims to complete a nationwide school revitalization program by 2029, after renovating 17,000 schools in 2025 and targeting 71,744 more in 2026.

“Next year, our target is 100,000, followed by another 100,000 in 2028. By 2029, every school in Indonesia must be fully renovated,” Prabowo said.

He made the remarks during his State of the Nation Address at the 2026 Annual Session of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) and the Joint Session of the House of Representatives (DPR) and Regional Representatives Council (DPD) in Jakarta on Friday.

Prabowo said underdeveloped, frontier and outermost regions, known as 3T areas, are also covered by what he called Indonesia’s largest school renovation program.

“Even on remote islands such as Miangas, we have renovated local schools and established a dedicated task force for these remote islands,” he said.

To meet the target, Prabowo said the revitalization program would be accelerated further in 2027 and 2028.

By 2029, Prabowo wants Indonesia to have no more damaged classrooms or collapsed school buildings.

“Every school must be in good, safe and clean condition and suitable for learning. Every school must have decent restrooms,” Prabowo said.

Separately, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Abdul Mu’ti said his ministry had requested additional funding to support the target.

“We have requested additional funds from the Finance Ministry for 2027,” Mu’ti said after Prabowo presented the 2027 draft state budget and financial note at parliament.
