Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto urged BRICS countries to turn vulnerabilities into opportunities and strength to build more resilient and fairer economies at the 2026 BRICS Summit in New Delhi, India, on Sunday.

According to a statement from the Indonesian Presidential Secretariat, Prabowo stressed that resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability must be oriented toward delivering concrete benefits for people.

Speaking in a session themed “Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability: Shaping the Future for Inclusive Global Growth”, Prabowo said Indonesia understands the challenges faced by fellow BRICS member states.

He noted Indonesia’s position within the Pacific Ring of Fire, which exposes the archipelagic country to risks from rising sea levels, extreme weather, and volcanic activity.

Despite the vulnerabilities, Prabowo expressed confidence Indonesia has the resources to shape a better future, citing vast forests, critical minerals, rare-earth elements, and renewable energy sources.

He added other BRICS countries face similar conditions, collectively holding a significant share of the world’s critical minerals and energy resources. This strength, he said, can be harnessed to build the foundation for a green economy era.

With that in mind, the Indonesian leader underscored the importance of drawing lessons from natural disasters and realising that resilience is closely connected to climate change and national development.

Prabowo further stated that Indonesia, fellow BRICS countries, and many others in the Global South need to work together to address their shared challenges.

The president therefore called on BRICS nations to align their resources, production capacity, technological capabilities, and markets to play a greater role in global development.

He made a similar statement on the first day of the 18th BRICS Summit, voicing his optimism about BRICS contributing to resilience globally.

“BRICS has a role to play in strengthening our own capacity to contribute to global resilience. By mobilising resources for infrastructure and development, we can strengthen the Global South’s capacity to finance its own future,” Prabowo said during a session themed “Inclusive Global Governance and Strengthening Multilateralism” on Saturday (Sept 12).
