President Prabowo orders hospitals to treat BPJS patients equally

Jakarta (ANTARA) – President Prabowo Subianto instructed Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin to ensure that hospitals provide equal treatment to all patients, regardless of whether they are covered by the National Health Insurance (BPJS Kesehatan).

At the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Monday, the president led a limited meeting on BPJS Kesehatan with Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin, Finance Minister Suahasil Nazara, and Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto.

Also attending the meeting were Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian, Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf, and BPJS Kesehatan President Director Prihati Pujowaskito.

“The President called for improvements in BPJS services, including shorter waiting times and better patient care. He also stressed that hospitals must provide equal treatment to patients, regardless of whether they are covered by BPJS,” Sadikin said during a press conference after the meeting.

During the meeting, he said President Prabowo also received a report on a total of Rp20 trillion (US$1 billion) in State Budget funds allocated for health insurance in 2026.

“BPJS officials also sought assurance that its financial sustainability would be maintained. The Finance Minister has provided clarity that as long as BPJS continues to deliver quality services and meet public needs, its financial sustainability will be ensured,” Sadikin said.

On the same occasion, Finance Minister Nazara explained that the Rp20 trillion allocation was additional funding on top of the budget already provided for 96.8 million premium assistance recipients.

“The budget for premium assistance recipients is around Rp47 trillion (US$2.5 billion), while an additional Rp20 trillion will be disbursed to support BPJS Kesehatan’s finances in October and November. This will ensure that the program’s financial needs are adequately covered,” he said.

Meanwhile, BPJS Kesehatan President Director Prihati Pujowaskito expressed gratitude to President Prabowo and the government for the additional Rp20 trillion allocation.

Prihati explained that BPJS Kesehatan is currently improving its services, including by taking measures to eliminate fraudulent practices.

“We are committed to improving the quality of services for participants to better meet their needs,” he said.
