President Prabowo visits earthquake-affected residents in Nagekeo

Kupang, NTT (ANTARA) – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto visited residents affected by the 7.7-magnitude earthquake in Nagekeo, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), while assuring optimal assistance and response from the government.

Prabowo arrived at Komodo International Airport in Labuan Bajo on Wednesday. He went directly to Nagekeo District to inspect the conditions of the people affected by the Flores earthquake.

According to Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi, the head of state will directly observe the condition of the community and ensure proper disaster management along with fulfillment of resident needs.

“This visit is also part of an effort to ensure effective coordination between the central government, regional governments, the military, the police, and all relevant agencies in responding to the earthquake on Flores Island, NTT,” he explained.

On the occasion, the president also led a coordination meeting at the NTT Natural Disaster Management Command Post of the IX/Udayana Military Command in Nagekeo.

Prabowo is accompanied by several relevant ministers, including Minister of Public Works Dody Hanggodo, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia, Minister of Home Affairs Muhammad Tito Karnavian, and National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit.

Also in attendance were NTT Governor Melki Laka Lena and several regional heads.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) recorded that as of Tuesday (August 25), the death toll from the 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Nagekeo had risen to 103, comprising 41 in Manggarai, 34 in East Manggarai, 13 in Nagekeo, six in Sikka, five in Ngada, three in Ende, and one in West Manggarai.

By gender, men accounted for 45 percent of the fatalities, while women made up the remaining 55 percent. By age group, 45 percent of those who died were elderly people, 37 percent were adults, 12 percent were children and adolescents, and the remainder were infants and toddlers.

The number of injured victims had also risen to 1,666 as of Tuesday, compared with 1,603 recorded on Monday (August 24).

East Manggarai District recorded the highest number of injuries, with 239 people sustaining serious injuries and another 404 suffering minor injuries. BNPB continues to update the casualty figures as new reports are received from earthquake-affected areas.
