Jakarta (ANTARA) – President Prabowo Subianto on Sunday welcomed United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres for bilateral talks at the presidential retreat in Hambalang, Bogor District, West Java.
“The meeting discussed strategic issues and steps to strengthen multilateral communication and cooperation in addressing global challenges,” the Presidential Secretariat said in a statement on the meeting.
“The meeting also served to strengthen dialogue and partnership between Indonesia and the United Nations and reaffirm the importance of international cooperation in promoting peace and stability and resolving global conflicts through multilateral approaches,” it added.
Photographs released by the Presidential Secretariat showed Prabowo personally welcoming Guterres, who wore a long-sleeved batik shirt, on the front porch of his residence.
The two leaders shook hands and embraced before Prabowo escorted his guest inside, where children dressed in traditional costumes stood ready to welcome them.
Prabowo and Guterres then joined their respective delegations in the meeting room for closed-door talks.
Prabowo was accompanied by Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Cultural Affairs Sugiono, Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir, and State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi.
Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya and Indonesia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, Umar Hadi, also attended the bilateral meeting.
Meanwhile, Guterres was accompanied by UN Special Envoy for Water and former Indonesian foreign minister Retno Marsudi, as well as UN Resident Coordinator in Indonesia Gita Sabharwal.
During his visit, Guterres is scheduled to visit the Indonesian National Armed Forces’ Peacekeeping Center, where he will meet Indonesian personnel preparing for deployment to the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).
In addition to meeting Prabowo, Guterres is scheduled to deliver an address on the future of multilateralism at Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry during his stay in Jakarta.
UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq said the visit would help “strengthen cooperation between Indonesia and the United Nations within the multilateral system.”
