Puan condoles with NTT quake victims, highlights social justice

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) Puan Maharani expressed her condolences to the victims of the earthquake in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) and highlighted the importance of social justice as Indonesia marked the 81st anniversary of its independence.

She urged the public to commemorate this year’s Independence Day solemnly and modestly in consideration of the grief caused by the natural disaster.

“During this Independence Day commemoration, our people are in a state of deep concern over the recent earthquake in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). Let us pray for the disaster victims and hope for a speedy recovery,” she said in a statement on Monday.

Puan also emphasized the importance of ensuring justice for all Indonesians. She said 81 years of independence should serve as a milestone for continuously strengthening national unity, safeguarding sovereignty, upholding justice, and promoting prosperity.

She urged all Indonesians to maintain and strengthen national unity, stressing that this responsibility lies with every citizen, particularly state officials.

She also highlighted this year’s Independence Day theme, “Sovereign, Just, and Prosperous Indonesia”, saying it should serve as momentum to raise the standard of national development for the welfare of the people.

Puan noted that achieving this goal requires the concerted efforts of all Indonesians and every element of the state.

“When all elements uphold the spirit of mutual cooperation and prioritize the interests of the nation over group interests, development will be able to provide significant and equitable benefits for all Indonesian people,” she said.

Furthermore, Puan urged the public to maintain harmony amid differences. She emphasized that diversity is not a threat to unity, but rather a source of harmony that must be bound by a shared sense of belonging as Indonesians.

Puan Maharani attended the 81st Indonesian Independence Day ceremony at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta, wearing a modern white kebaya and a red traditional wrap, paired with a black NTT woven scarf.

She sat to the right of President Prabowo Subianto, alongside People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Speaker Ahmad Muzani and Regional Representative Council (DPD) Speaker Sultan Bachtiar Najamudin.
