Jakarta (ANTARA) – Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) Puan Maharani has urged law enforcers to unravel the case surrounding Bambang Setiyawan, 59, a mirror seller who reportedly died following unrest in Pejompongan, Central Jakarta.
“We want law enforcers to investigate this matter thoroughly,” she remarked at the parliament complex in Jakarta on Tuesday.
Puan made the remarks amid public speculation regarding violent incidents in the aftermath of demonstrations in Jakarta on Aug. 27. Bambang was found unconscious at night and later died despite receiving medical treatment.
The DPR speaker asserted that it is crucial that the police establish the actual sequence of events and gather sufficient evidence to reach a conclusion.
Alluding to allegations that community organization GRIB Jaya was responsible for Bambang’s death, Puan underscored the need for law enforcers to base their course of action on evidence in the matter.
She stressed that the case must be resolved, including if the organization is proven to have been implicated in the incident.
Furthermore, the legislator appealed to residents to voice their aspirations or dissent in a peaceful manner and avoid violent or destructive behavior.
The Jakarta Metropolitan Police earlier reported that Bambang was found unresponsive during unrest in Pejompongan.
Police spokesperson Senior Commissioner Budi Hermanto explained that his personnel were unable to summarily evacuate the man, citing safety risks amid the commotion.
“Once the location had been secured, a medical team from the Jakarta Metro Police immediately evacuated the unconscious man,” he said, adding that Bambang was rushed to Dr. Mintoharjo Navy Hospital before being pronounced dead.
Hermanto noted that the victim’s family refused an autopsy, prompting investigators to seek other ways to determine the cause of his death.
Meanwhile, GRIB Jaya has denied any involvement in the incident, saying it did not mobilize its members to Pejompongan during the unrest.
