PVMBG continues monitoring Anak Krakatau after eruption ends

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) said Mount Anak Krakatau’s 25-hour continuous eruption had ended, but the volcano remained at Level III, or Alert, with further eruptions still possible.

PVMBG Head Siti Sumilah Rita Susilawati said instrumental recordings showed the continuous eruption began at 11:07 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, and ended at 12:04 a.m. Sunday.

Afterward, PVMBG recorded one Strombolian-type eruption at 3:53 a.m., lasting about 30 seconds, according to the agency’s monitoring data.

Siti said the subsequent eruption was tentatively interpreted as marking the end of the previous continuous eruption episode.

During observations from Sept. 5-6, Anak Krakatau was clearly visible at times, although fog occasionally obscured the volcano.

Monitoring cameras showed predominantly red eruption columns at night, while blackish plumes rose from the volcano during daylight hours.

Instrumental data showed volcanic activity increased on Sept. 5 before declining on Sept. 6. Tiltmeter readings at Tanjung Station continued rising from early August, while Lava93 Station remained relatively stable.

Siti said Anak Krakatau’s volcanic dynamics remained active despite the end of the continuous eruption episode.

The potential for further eruptions remains high, with hazards including incandescent rocks, heavy ashfall and possible lava flows if continuous eruptions resume.

PVMBG advised the public, tourists and climbers to remain at least three kilometers from the volcano’s center.

The agency urged residents along the Banten and Lampung coasts to remain calm and reject unverified claims about a possible eruption-related tsunami.

Residents can continue normal activities while following directions from local Regional Disaster Management Agencies, or BPBDs, and monitoring official updates on volcanic activity.
