Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan said the government is encouraging the use of pyrolysis technology to complement waste-to-energy (WtE) plants in accelerating national waste management.
Hasan noted the capacity of WtE plants currently being developed cannot process all generated waste, necessitating alternative processing technologies capable of converting waste into energy.
“In addition to WtE plant development, the government is also promoting the use of pyrolysis technology, so that more waste can be converted into energy,” Hasan said in an official statement received here in Jakarta on Sunday.
The implementation of Presidential Regulation Number 109 of 2025 has accelerated WtE construction across several regions, with Indonesia set to host 13 WtE plants, including a facility in Palembang targeted to begin operations in October 2026.
However, he pointed out the facilities are projected to handle only around 22 percent of national waste generation, underscoring the need for complementary processing technologies.

Therefore, the government is championing the use of pyrolysis technology in order convert waste accumulated in landfills into a renewable fuel equivalent to diesel.
The broader adoption of the technology is projected to help address around 20 percent of the national waste problem.
Hasan said the development of pyrolysis technology is also being carried out in collaboration with the Indonesian Army and local governments, including pilot projects in five regions, namely Bogor City, Bogor District, Semarang City, Bekasi City, and Jakarta.
He stressed that accelerating waste management is critical to reduce waste accumulation and mitigate the heightened risk of fires during dry seasons.
Developing technologies to convert waste into energy is part of Indonesia’s strategy to ease the burden on landfills while maximising the utility of waste.
“We want to not only resolve the waste issue, but also generate economic and energy benefits for the community. Through swift, collaborative effort, we can achieve this target,” he said.
