President Prabowo Subianto highlighted, Friday, that Indonesia’s bullion banking ecosystem has accumulated 153 tons of gold valued at approximately Rp360 trillion ($20 billion) since its launch last year.
Speaking at his annual state address before the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) at the Parliament Complex in Jakarta, Prabowo framed bullion banking as a strategic mechanism for Indonesia to retain sovereign control over its domestic gold wealth.
“Our bullion banks at Pegadaian and Bank Syariah Indonesia already manage 153 tons of gold, valued at approximately Rp 360 trillion,” Prabowo said during his address marking the 81st anniversary of Indonesia’s independence.
“Indonesia’s wealth must strengthen our savings, financing, and broader national economy.”
Launched in early 2025, bullion services allow state-backed institutions to accept gold deposits, issue physical gold-backed accounts, and provide precious metal financing.
According to data from the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, state pawnbroker PT Pegadaian saw its customer base expand from 3.2 million to 5.6 million in the year following the launch, with total public gold savings nearly doubling to 19.25 tons.
Concurrently, Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI) increased its total gold holdings—including gold savings, installments, and pawning—to 22.5 tons, up from 16.85 tons prior to the initiative’s rollout.
