Jakarta (ANTARA) – Surgeons at Cipto Mangunkusumo National Central General Hospital (RSCM) performed Indonesia’s first remote gynecologic surgery using telerobotic technology, connecting Jakarta and Bali across more than 1,000 kilometers.
The procedure was performed at RSCM Kencana Operating Room in Jakarta and broadcast live to the APAGE and IGES annual meetings at Jimbaran Convention Center in Bali.
Speaking in Jakarta on Thursday, RSCM Planning and Service Strategy Development Director Bobi Prabowo said the breakthrough advances the hospital’s use of technology, artificial intelligence and telemedicine in surgical care.
The procedure connected the conference venue in Bali with RSCM’s operating room in Jakarta, spanning more than 1,000 kilometers, Bobi said.
RSCM’s Department of Urology previously performed the hospital’s first telerobotic surgery in 2024, laying the groundwork for expanding the technology to gynecological procedures.
The expansion could broaden access to minimally invasive and precise remote surgery across Indonesia’s vast archipelago, the hospital said.
Lead surgeon Dr. Herbert Situmorang, Sp.OG, Subsp.F.E.R., confirmed the procedure’s success and said the supporting technology and infrastructure had met requirements for remote surgery.
He said the operation marked Indonesia’s first remote gynecologic surgery and demonstrated that the robotic system and internet connection were sufficiently reliable for the procedure.
The live demonstration was held during the APAGE and IGES meetings under the theme “Collective Brilliance: Elevating Gynecologic Endoscopy through Shared Innovation,” highlighting Indonesian specialists’ adoption of advanced surgical techniques.
